چکیده

This paper looks at the age-old problem of trying to instil some degree of intelligence in computers. Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Genetic Programming (GP) are techniques that are used to evolve a solution to a problem using processes that mimic natural evolution. This paper reflects on the experience gained while conducting research applying GA and GP to two quite different problems: Medical Diagnosis and Robot Path Planning. The observation is made that when these algorithms are not applied correctly the computer seemingly exhibits lazy behaviour, arriving at a suboptimal solutions. Using examples, the paper shows how this ‘lazy’ behaviour can be overcome.

Lifting of L-Narrowing Derivations

If conditional rewrite-rules are restricted to the form P =⇒ f(x1, . . . , xn)→ t where P is a finite set of equations, f is any function symbol, x1, . . . , xn are variables, and t is any term then the premise P contains in general variables which do not occur in the list x1, . . . , xn. The rule with premise P can be applied if P is satisfiable. Therefore, we need methods to solve P and narro...

Taking Turing by Surprise? Designing Digital Computers for morally-loaded contexts

There is much to learn from what Turing hastily dismissed as Lady Lovelace’s ‘objection’: ‘digital computers’ can indeed surprise us. Just like a piece of art, algorithms can be designed in such a way as to lead us to question our understanding of the world, or our place within it. Some humans do lose the capacity to be surprised in that way: it might be fear, or it might be the comfort of ideo...

Discovering Plausible Explanations of Carcinogenecity in Chemical Compounds

The goal of predictive toxicology is the automatic construction of carcinogenecity models. Most common artificial intelligence techniques used to construct these models are inductive learning methods. In a previous work we presented an approach that uses lazy learning methods for solving the problem of predicting carcinogenecity. Lazy learning methods solve new problems based on their similarit...

Do People Think Like Computers?

Human cognition inspired the earliest algorithms for gameplaying computer programs. However, the studies of human and computer game play quickly diverged: the Artificial Intelligence community focused on theory and techniques to solve games, while behavioral scientists empirically examined simple decision-making in humans. In this paper, we combine concepts and methods from the two fields to in...

Routine High-Return Human-Competitive Machine Learning

Genetic programming is a systematic method for getting computers to automatically solve a problem. Genetic programming starts from a highlevel statement of what needs to be done and automatically creates a computer program to solve the problem. The paper makes the points that (1) genetic programming now routinely delivers highreturn human-competitive machine intelligence; (2) it is an automated...
